Pennsylvania Graduate Received 1.8 million Scholarship,57 College Offers; Shares Pro Advice For Others


Sidni Smith, a Pennsylvania student from East Stroudsburg high school currently received 1.8 million as a scholarship and was offered from 57 colleges and universities.

Sidni who turned 17 this year said that she always wanted to be debt-free out of college so she was looking for a school with the best scholarship. The recent graduate teen received her diploma on June 11 and started applying to schools. She received her first acceptance letter in November.

She also added ‘when it comes to applying I wanted to have a lot of options. I’m indecisive and I didn’t just apply to one school-my dream school if I didn’t get in. I wanted something I could fall back on. Sidni graduated among the top 10% of his class.

How does Sidnis’s start applying?

She started applying through Common Black College Application App and Common App to apply in several colleges. Smith was accepted in 41 out of 64 HBCUs, and the remaining 16 found smith’s application via Common App.

Sidni was eyeing Howard University, Cornell University, and Duke University, but she chose to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Sidnis’s mother Fran Mitchell stated the University of Michigan was one of the first schools in the United States of America to accept Black students. In 1853 Samuel Codes Watson was first accepted to the university. Though Michigan University is not known as an HBCU.

Her mother speaks loudly about her daughter’s dynamic mindset and clarified why Michigan would be a great fit for her daughter. ”Sidni has a progressive mindset being a Black young lady and Michigan is going to be a great fit for her because it is a progressive university that caters to minority students. Even though the minority population is still small they make the minority students feel seen — and not just Black students, we saw a lot of Asian and Middle Eastern students walking around,” Mitchell says.

Sidney shared some useful tips for students. She never thought that one day she would be a student at Michigan University. Put yourself out there and try your best,” she says. “I never would have thought I was going to get into the University of Michigan with almost a full ride.”
